poster_2016_CORELDRAWThe Museum of Mértola will mark the International Day of Museums, celebrated on May 18, with activities at the museum nucleus of the Ermida and Necropolis of S. Sebastião, located at EB 2,3 ES de Mértola. With the motto “My School Has a Museum”, the school and the museum “open their doors to the community”.

The actions take place from 10:00 am to 17:00 pm and include guided visits to the site, presentation of educational materials and the actions of the Museum of Mértola aimed at the school community.

The Mértola Town Council explains that “the most significant part of a large Roman and late-Roman necropolis was excavated and musealized in the school yard, on which a small chapel dedicated to S. Sebastião was built in the XNUMXth century”.

The cemetery, carved into the rock, can be visited through a metal walkway and has an indicative panel. The hermitage, completely rebuilt, in a pedagogical operation, with the help of archeology students from the Bento de Jesus Caraça School, houses a small museum where, among other artefacts, a XNUMXth century gold medal can be admired, found in a child's grave.

The local authority invites “students, teaching and non-teaching staff and parents and guardians to visit this museum nucleus and learn about the work developed by the Museum of Mértola”.
