oil rigThe Algarve Free Oil Movement will organize a human cordon against offshore oil exploration off Aljezur, on Saturday, June 11th, at 16 pm, in front of Aljezur City Hall.

In a note sent to the newsrooms, the MALP explains that “it considers it unacceptable that the State and the Portuguese Government, via the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services, sneak into a public consultation with the aim of deciding on the authorization of oil prospecting off the beaches of Alentejo and Algarve when the previous week the voices of the main representatives of the region took a clear and forceful position against the exploitation of oil and natural gas in the Algarve region».

The Algarve Livre de Petróleo Movement calls for «the main living forces of the Algarve and Alentejo regions, mayors, tourism and fishing entrepreneurs, representatives of the real estate sector, trade unions, social movements, environmental associations, political parties, national citizens and foreigners, gather in front of the Aljezur Town Hall to, once again, jointly affirm a resounding no to the exploration of oil and natural gas in the sea and lands of the Algarve.

The initiative also aims to “sensitize the entire Portuguese population to the need to actively participate in the public consultation that the Portuguese State will carry out until June 22, in order to find good arguments to support a decision that can curb the barbarism that is foreseen for the Algarve and for the coastal region of Alentejo».

The movement also appeals “to all those who carry a red card to show their moral disapproval of the concessionaire ENI/GALP and informs that it will put Dr. Paulo Carmona's resignation to the vote in a popular consultation in front of the Municipal Council of Aljezur of ENMC because it considers that its interventions in the public space have not been guided by the defense of the public interest and the lives of the populations that inhabit the local territories and seems more interested in defending the exploitation of hydrocarbons in Portugal».
