minister of healthMortality from cerebrovascular diseases in Portugal reached, in 2013, the lowest value ever of 29,5%, maintaining a downward trajectory in the last three decades, announced yesterday the Minister of Health, at the opening session of the Portuguese Congress of Cardiology 2016 (CPC), which started in a hotel in Vilamoura.

Despite this positive evolution, minister Adalberto Campos Fernandes underlined that cerebrovascular diseases continue to occupy the 1st place in the causes of death for Portuguese people under 70 years of age and that there is still much work to be continued in terms of prevention, education and awareness of the population.

The opening of the 37th edition of the CPC was also attended by Professor Valentin Fuster, from Mount Sinai Hospital, in Manhattan, New York, and by the mayors of Loulé, Vítor Aleixo, of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology, Miguel Mendes, and of European Society of Cardiology, Fausto Pinto.

Under the motto “The Pulsar of Science, to the Rhythm of the Heart”, the Portuguese Congress of Cardiology continues until the 26th of April, being a meeting point and scientific discussion center for all physicians involved in the follow-up of patients in the cardiovascular area.

Nuno Betterncourt, president of the Congress organizing committee announced that "this was the most participated edition of the CPC ever, with the highest number of entries and works submitted to the competition".

The Portuguese Society of Cardiology expects a strongly participated and multidisciplinary congress, with integration and sharing of knowledge between the various specialties, and with a strong clinical component.

To this end, a more formative line was created, to update the “State of the art” in the light of new evidence, with immediate application in clinical practice.

Simultaneously, with a view to extending the program to new generations, the package “My first CPC” was created, which is aimed at students from the 6th year of Medicine, interns of the common year and interns of the first year of the specialty, who wish to participate in the congress , benefiting from favorable financial conditions.

The scientific program, which includes topics of great up-to-date, varied and of interest to all participants, will highlight, in each area of ​​cardiology, the main novelties in clinical practice.

CPC2016 receives important guests from Cardiology World, among which professors Valentin Fuster and Alain Carpentier stand out, “father” of many innovations in cardiology.
