Several European and world medal-winning athletes, including world champions, have chosen the Vila Real de Santo António High Performance Center (CAR) to be part of their preparation for the Olympic Games, to be played in Rio de Janeiro , this summer, as well as for the European Championship in Athletics, which Amsterdam will host.

During the month of April, the center hosted more than 2 sporting stages, including world champion Piotr Malachowski (Poland), who won this title at the World Cups held in Beijing last year, and runner-up. heptathlon world champion Oleksiy Kasyanov (Ukraine), who won the silver medal at the indoor world championships, which took place in 2016 in Portland.

Highlights include Laura Ikauniece-Admidina (Latvia), bronze medal in heptathlon also at the World Cups in Beijing, Adam Kszczot (Poland), European 800 meters champion in Zurich 2014 and Rasmus Magi (Estonia), silver medal at the European Championships in Zurich 2014 in the 400 meter hurdles race.

In the group of Portuguese athletes, attention is focused on the marcher Ana Cabecinha, already pre-selected for the 2016 Olympics, who is looking for the goal of getting a medal in Rio de Janeiro, after having been ranked fourth in the last world championships.

In addition to these winners, a group of British Paralympic athletes is also in preparation, including the athlete Nathan Stephens, world champion in 2011 at the launch of the disc.

In 2015, the Sports Foundation of Vila Real de Santo António was integrated into the national network of High Performance Sports Centres, with a focus on athletics, judo, football, triathlon and swimming.

The CARs seek to meet the needs of sports federations, detect and enhance sports talent, enable internships, evaluate, control and optimize training, assist scientific research and monitor results.
