The students from Olhano, who participated for the first time in the event, won 1st prize in the “Robot Design: Programming” category and 2nd prize in the “Project: Innovative Solution” category.

The competition took place at the Instituto Superior Técnico, in Oeiras, and had the participation of students from 9 to 16 years old, divided into 19 teams from schools across the country, from Braga to the Algarve, with the teams from Colégio Bernardette Romeira being the only ones with origin south of Lisbon.

According to the Chamber of Olhão, "the tournament was divided into two parts: the robotic competition itself and the presentation of a project for an innovative solution that solves a real-world problem related to the issue of pollution."

The robot presented was an EV3 Educator model that uses rotation (gyroscope) and ultrasonic (distance) sensors to move across the mat and approach the locations of the missions proposed in the competition.

«The project analyzed the pollution in the Ria Formosa, which affects the survival of some of the species that inhabit there, and identified the need to creatively reuse part of the waste found. Following this research, the students found an innovative way to reuse cans through the construction of toys made with these materials», says the municipality of Olho.

The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a program for children aged 9 to 16 that was designed to awaken their interest in science and technology and give them important skills for their future.
