algarve jazz orchestraThe Algarve Jazz Orchestra dedicates the month of April to celebrating the spirit of the International Jazz Day, with performances and concerts in schools, concert halls and other venues in the municipalities of Lagoa, Albufeira and Lagos.

For younger people, and sharing the synergy of the International Jazz Day Organization, Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and UNESCO, between April 19 and 21, activities will be carried out in schools, in the Municipal Auditorium of Lagoa and in the Lagos Cultural Center.

So, in the days April 19 and 21, at 10:30 am, the Polyvalent Room of the Municipal Auditorium of Lagoa receives the initiative "Jazz At School and the Mystery of Improvisation", which is also presented at the same day 19, but at 15:00 pm, at Escola Tecnopólis, in Lagos.

In these sessions, the musician, professor and director of OJA Hugo Alves will demystify what Improvisation is, something that may seem very complicated, but which in the end may not be.

These are sessions aimed at the school community and which aim to put students in contact with Improvised Music, namely in the language of Jazz, but not only. These sessions can also include an experimentation, by students who wish to participate more actively.

A 21 April (18:00), it will be the turn of Room 2 of the Lagos Cultural Center stage the Improvisation Workshop, whose registration (via email [email protected]) costs 5 euros.

hugo alves«We often imagine that jazz musicians throw a lot of notes to the four winds. But after all, if so, why doesn't it sound bad? Or after all, why did the form and language used in Jazz change from the 40's to the 60's or even the 70's? Why did it become complex? And, why does it eventually demand more from the public and audiophiles to be able to decipher it?”. Hugo Alves will demystify this evolution, explain how it is done, what rules and freedoms actually exist, and how Improvisation has evolved throughout the history of Jazz.

On 22, at 17:45 pm, under the Lagoa Wine Show (Arade Congress Center), OJA Redux will also act.

On 29 (19:30), Hugo Alves presents his new project «Magic Stars», in quartet, in a more intimate concert at the resort Villa Vita Park, in Alporchinhos, on the coast of the municipality of Lagoa.

This is followed by three concerts, one of which on May 1st, to mark the International Day of Jazz, which celebrates the 30 April.

So, on that day, at 16:00 pm, Hugo Alves Quarteto Magic Stars presents itself at the Albufeira Municipal Auditorium.

Also the 30 April (21:30 pm), the highlight of the month arrives: the concert by the Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve, which will have pianist Greg Burk and Maria Anadon as guests, at the Lagos Cultural Center. Tickets cost 10 euros or 8 euros (for youth and seniors card).

The concert will be dedicated to George Gershwin, «often classified as a Crossovers between classical music and jazz", who wanted to "signify a position of creating truly American music, with one foot firmly rooted in classical music and the other in jazz. He himself was at times contradictory: if there were periods when he abhorred them to improvise on his Music, in others he defended the colors of Jazz».

In this concert in Lagos, the Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve conducted by trumpeter Hugo Alves will have two international guests – Greg Burk, on piano, and Maria Anadon, on voice.

Hugo Alves«The great standards of this author will be revisited, with all its Swing of the time, but not only. Much has been done about his Music, which easily adapted to what the XNUMXth century has come to offer, in the latinAt Bossa, for example. “A Foggy Day”, “Summertime”, “Rapsody in Blue” will be some of the themes to revisit, by a composer who, after all, gave so much to Jazz».

Finally, closing an intense month (or starting another), the May 1 (21:30 pm), it will be the turn of Hugo Alves Quarteto Magic Stars to act in the Theater of FiguresOn Faro.

«Hugo Alves Magic Stars» is the title of the new project by trumpeter Hugo Alves, which will give rise to his fifth album of originals.

Hugo Alves once again demonstrates all his artistic mastery, acquired through a solid career, both as a musician and as a composer.

«Based on sounds rooted in the jazz tradition, contemporary and fusion melodies emerge that emerge in an enveloping melodic whirl. Language integration latin, Funk e Swing they spice up this orchestral concept, which stands out for its originality and innovation», explains the Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve.

The complicity of Hugo Alves' trumpet is joined by other notable instrumentalists – Greg Burk, on piano, and Michael Lauren, on drums -, both Americans. The quartet is complemented by Luís Henrique's double bass, considered an emerging value in Portugal.

«Magic Stars presents itself as an intense concert, evoking feelings and emotions. It's not just a show for those who like Jazz, but for those who like sensations». In other words, a concert not to be missed.

OJA's programming has the support of the Secretary of State for Culture/General Directorate of Arts, Municipality of Lagoa, Algarve Tourism Region, Lagos City Council, Albufeira City Council, Vila Vita Parc and Teatro das Figuras.
