InternetThe preservation of web pages is the theme of the conference by Daniel Gomes, from the Foundation for National Scientific Computing, scheduled for March 17, at 17 pm, at the Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes (ISMAT), in Portimão. This is another session of the cycle «Between Archives».

At the conference, Daniel Gomes will present the project he initiated and coordinates, the file.pt, from the Foundation for National Scientific Computing (FCCN) unit of the Foundation for Science and Technology.

Everyone is invited to participate and reflect on this theme. Admission is free and with the right to a certificate of participation.

The Web was conceived as a means of fast communication, but it has progressively replaced the press as the privileged means of publication. There are more and more publications that are exclusively disseminated through the Web.

However, the Web suffers from a serious problem as a means of publishing and disseminating knowledge: the information published on it is extremely ephemeral.

The Web archive, in addition to contributing to the preservation of scientific and historical knowledge, also allows ordinary citizens to keep their memories as individuals.

Web publishing has broken economic and geographic barriers to knowledge, but the ephemeral nature of the Web could break access to knowledge itself. “We have a responsibility to ensure that information published online remains accessible for future generations,” stress conference organizers.

O Archive.pt is a free public service that archives and preserves web content relevant to the Portuguese community. In http://www.arquivo.pt anyone can search archived information from the web since 1996.

Daniel Gomes started and coordinates the Arquivo.pt service in the Foundation for National Scientific Computing (FCCN) unit of the Foundation for Science and Technology.

He is a researcher in the area of research and preservation of information published on the web since 2001. He received his doctorate from the University of Lisbon in 2007.
