These visits are part of the “Ação Portas Abertas”, one of the initiatives of the company Águas do Algarve to commemorate the World Water Day, which is celebrated on March 22. The project is intended to “invite” the population to visit the infrastructures that treat the waters of the Algarve.

The first visit, scheduled for the 10th, will be to the Albufeira Poente WWTP, a facility that regulates water production through preliminary, biological, physical-chemical and disinfection treatment stages.

This is followed by the visit to the Almargem WWTP, on the 11th. Located along the left bank of the Ribeira de Almargem (Tavira), the structure serves around 48 inhabitants and is equipped with an additional filtration and disinfection system.

On the 22nd, visits to the Odelouca Dam and the Alcantarilha Water Treatment Plant are scheduled.

According to the company Águas do Algarve, the dam of the Odelouca Dam is "located in an area of important ecological heritage, with the objective of providing water with high levels of quality and guarantee".

«It is the main source of water in the Algarve, articulated with a set of other sources of surface and underground water», adds the company.

The water treated in this ETA is intended for the population of the Barlavento Algarvio, and may, if necessary, also supply the municipalities of Faro, Olhão and Tavira.

The “Ação Portas Abertas” initiative ends on March 30, with a visit to the Tavira ETA, which treats the water coming from the Odeleite and Beliche reservoirs. “The station serves a maximum population of 460 inhabitants, in the eastern Algarve, hoping to reach 530 by the year 2024,” adds the company.

Visits last two and a half hours and always start at 15 pm. They are free, but registration is mandatory.
