MértolaA conference within the scope of the exhibition “At the extreme of al-Andalus: Mértola and the Guadiana”, under the guidance of Susana Gómez Martínez (Archaeological Field of Mértola), is scheduled for January 30, at 11:00 am, at the Islamic Museum, in Tavira.

Made up of unpublished pieces from the collection of the Museum of Mértola, this exhibition aims to show the deep historical relationship of this town in Alentejo with the river that has always given it meaning.

The Guadiana River was the determining factor in the settlement of Mértola, from prehistory to the present day, due to the exceptional strategic defensive and navigational conditions (70 km between the Algarve and Mértola).

According to archaeological investigations, there has been evidence of the existence, since the Iron Age, of a fortified settlement on the rocky promontory, as the city walls testify to the present day.

Remains from all eras have been found and can be admired, namely, fine Greek ceramics, Punic amphorae, imperial marble, mosaics with a Byzantine influence, Islamic glass using oriental techniques and XNUMXth-century Sevillian tiles.

The conference, designed for a maximum number of 30 participants, is aimed at the general public. Registration is free and mandatory.
