Caique Bom Sucesso is undergoing a repair and maintenance intervention for the entire hull and canopy and should be back on its pier, next to the Municipal Markets of Olhão, in the spring, "already fully renovated", according to the City Council. Olhão.
This operation will motivate an investment of 35 thousand euros by the municipality of Olho, which owns the vessel.
Caique Bom Sucesso is a replica of the boat that went to Brazil to give, at first hand, the good news to the Prince Regent of the revolt of the people of Oyenne against the French invasions.
A risky journey, but one that earned Olhão emancipation from Faro, which the locals have long complained about.
Caique has been one of the boats most used by the people of Olhão for high-water fishing since, in the XNUMXth century, Olhão became one of the most important ports in the Algarve and the country.
“Also used for transporting goods, it was characterized by being resistant, fast and easy to manoeuvre”, according to the municipality.
«With the intention of perpetuating the history of Olhão, as well as the memory of the maritime people, the Municipality of Olhão ordered the construction of this replica of the Caíque Bom Sucesso, which is intended to promote cultural and recreational activities through visits and tours, by sailing or by motor, in the waters of the Ria Formosa and along the oceanic coast”, added the Chamber of Olhão.
