Centro MegalitismoMoraThe Interactive Museum of Megalithism, equipment whose construction is “practically complete” and which should open to the public “in April or May”, is one of the main bets for this year for the Câmara de Mora, in the Évora district.

The construction of the museological nucleus integrates the renovation project of the old railway station in Mora, involving an investment of 2,5 million euros, with 85% reimbursed by community funds, explained the mayor of the municipality Luís Simão.

According to the mayor, the equipment contract, in a newly constructed building adjacent to the train station, it is “practically complete”, so it should open “in April or May”.

“We expect it to be complementary to the Fluviário”, a space in the parish of Cabeção that portrays the world of lakes and rivers and that attracts “about 50 thousand visitors to the municipality every year”, he stressed.

But they are tourist visits made by people who “do not stay more than a day” in the municipality, the Chamber found out, through surveys, and so it intends, with the new museum, to extend these stays.

“More than half of those people who come to the Fluviário stay for a short time. We want them to stay here for more days and this is only possible if we have more interesting things to see”, explained Luís Simão.

The new museum is in line with this strategy, with the aim of taking advantage of and enhancing the archaeological wealth linked to the megalithic art existing in the municipality.

megalithic museum_3“The archaeological investigations in Mora began over 100 years ago. Thousands of pieces and monuments were found and, for a long time, research took place in the parish of Pavia, but today we know that there are traces in all the parishes”, he stressed.

The Megalithic Museum will exhibit megalithic pieces collected in the municipality, but its main focus will be to promote interactivity with visitors.

“The added value of the museum is the interactivity that the visitor will be able to experience while traveling through the space”, said the mayor, arguing that it is “an innovative project in the field of museology in Portugal”.

A three-dimensional film with the presentation of the museum, in which "people will feel involved and will better understand what they are going to visit", interactive showcases and the projection of holograms, which will make the appearance of "men from the time of megalithism", they are prepared “surprises”, revealed Luís Simão.

The Municipality of Mora's budget for this year is 10,4 million euros (in 2015 it was 11,5) and is also committed to the area of urban regeneration, with the projects of the Centro Cultural de Cabeção and Parque Urbano and Miradouro da county seat.
