Luis Gomes and David SantosLuís Gomes, mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, resigned on 12 December as chairman of the PSD/Algarve District Political Commission. The only candidate for his succession is, so far, David Santos, with elections already scheduled for January 30, according to Sul Informação.

Speaking to our newspaper, Luís Gomes detracts from his resignation: "I resigned only so that the mandate ended sooner [should end in May], in order to bring forward the elections" to choose a new leader for the Algarve social democrats .

“The reason for my resignation is very simple: I believe that, in the last Legislative Elections, a cycle has ended. And I think that the PSD/Algarve should go to the party's future congress already with a new structure and that this new structure should start as soon as possible to prepare the next Local Elections».

The mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, who has been president of the District since 2010, for three consecutive terms, can no longer apply for the position. “I believe in renewal and cycles, I'm not stuck with places. There are new challenges to answer», he considered.

David Santos, president of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission, is, for now, the only likely candidate for succession in the presidency of the PSD's District Political Commission.

In statements to the Sul Informação, David Santos said that he was just "thinking about the candidacy", which has not yet been formalized.

With the elections in the PSD/Algarve scheduled for January 30, possible candidates for leaders have until the 27th to formalize their intention.

Our newspaper knows that, despite not wanting to be "the candidate" yet, David Santos is already going through the municipal sections of his party throughout the Algarve, to gather support and make known his candidacy and the ideas that give it shape.

The first council to be visited was that of Vila Real de Santo António, where the outgoing president of the Orange District comes from. Other sections will follow, in this direct contact with PSD militants.
