If one day you go for a walk in Faro and finding the mathematical symbol Pi (π), followed by part of its numerical representation, occupying the sidewalk of a street from one end to the other, is because it is in the renovated Rua da Alfândega, whose works are almost finished.

This is one of the many rehabilitation works of the road network and public highway that are underway in Faro, the result of the investment that the Chamber made with part of the funds obtained from the sale of the former Magistério Primário building.

In all, one million euros was channeled to works that are about to end and others that will start soon or whose award process is in the final phase. According to the president of the Chamber Rogério Bacalhau, everything should be concluded "by April, at the latest".

On the ground, there are some works that have long been claimed, such as the renovation of Rua José de Matos and the requalification of EN 2, at the entrance to Faro, for those coming from the A22 and São Brás de Alportel.

In the first case, "70 to 80 percent of the interventions have been completed", in the second, "it is still necessary to place part of the rug and make the markings", a task that should take about two weeks, Rogério Bacalhau told Sul Informação.

At Rua Serpa Pinto, FAGAR is currently undergoing an intervention to renovate a branch of the water supply network. The road and the sidewalk will only be repaired later, probably "from next week onwards".

Also very soon, there is the start of the work to install traffic lights and traffic lights on Avenida Calouste Gulbenkian, the city's artery, which, after the opening of the bypass to Faro from the EN125, will assume its true urban character.

The renovation of Estoi's road network and the painting of roads and streets in the county are also almost starting, contracted at the same time.

Art Works Faro Requalify (19)In the pipeline, and «already in the final stage of preparation of the contracts for signature», are the renovation works of the road network of Conceição de Faro, from Rua Jornal do Algarve and between Falfosa and Santa Bárbara de Nexe.

In this wave of renewal, the local authority took the opportunity to wind up its imagination and create a differentiating element in Baixa da Cidade. On Rua da Alfândega, parallel to Avenida da República, near the Hotel Faro, the choice fell on the Pi symbol, which will now be inscribed on the Portuguese sidewalk of this artery, which was made exclusively for pedestrians.

The mayor of Faro he's a math teacher, but says he didn't "lobby" for this to be the symbol used. “We wanted to put something that stood out and, among the members of the executive, this idea came up. For me, it's nice that it's a mathematical symbol, but it was a decision taken together», he explained to Sul Informação.

Thus, in addition to the symbol Pi (π), passersby are accompanied by the numerical representation of this number, usually simplified to 3,14, but which has infinitely many decimal places. In other words, only the part of the number that fits on the street will be represented. In between, the municipality will leave a challenge. “In one of the numbers, we put an exclamation point, for anyone who wants to go looking and find out what it is,” said Rogério Bacalhau.
