cloud-computing_0Marco Vieira, from the Computer Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra (UC), coordinates an international team of researchers, responsible for drawing up a research plan in the area of Cloud Computing (cloud computing) designed to help policy makers in the European Union and Brazil take the best options on future projects to be financed in this area of knowledge.

This plan, with a proposal for lines of investigation for the coming years, will be developed within the scope of the “EUBrasilCloudFORUM” project, financed by the European Union and by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil. With a global budget of one million euros, in addition to the University of Coimbra, researchers from the United Kingdom, Ireland and Brazil are participating in the project.

Starting from the state of the art in Cloud Computing, the objective, says Marco Vieira, "is to identify the needs for future research and design a model that strengthens collaboration between Brazil and Europe and that allows for an increase in European and Brazilian scientific competence."

Cloud computing is characterized "by performance requirements, scalability, ubiquitous access from different devices and technologies and efficiency in the use of resources, also facing major challenges, namely in terms of information security and privacy", says the specialist at UC in software reliability and security.

Therefore, stresses the also professor of the Faculty of Science and Technology, the EUBrasilCloudFORUM «is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of new scientific and technological paradigms that will mark research in the field of Cloud Computing in the next decade. Based on the capacities and experience of each of the parties, it is possible to develop research that takes advantage of the “cloud”, in areas as diverse as smart cities, health, agriculture, e-commerce, etc».

On the 28th and 29th of January, the team will meet, in Coimbra, with representatives of the European Union and the National Network of Education and Research in Brazil, with a view to a first identification and definition of the themes that reflect the main research challenges in Cloud Computing and that strengthen the opportunities for collaboration between research groups from Brazil and Europe. The meeting starts at 9 am, at the Department of Informatics Engineering, at Polo II of UC.
