In addition to the damage to shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, houses and private and public vehicles, this Sunday's floods in Albufeira also caused «heavy» damage to «sewer, water and electricity networks, streets and roads and even in the beaches," the mayor told the Sul Informação.

Carlos Silva e Sousa said that the losses had not yet been accounted for, but amounted to "large thousands of euros".

An estimate that, according to what can be seen on the spot, is far below the value of the actual damage, which will reach millions of euros.

This morning, José Carlos Rolo, deputy mayor of Albufeira, had even admitted that the conditions may be in place to make a request for public calamity, as dozens of shops and cafes in the Baixa were destroyed by yesterday's floods.

But shortly thereafter, President Carlos Silva e Sousa contradicted him, advancing that, "for now", he will not proceed with the request for public calamity.

It is scheduled for today, at noon, a briefing between the president and journalists, where it is expected that an initial assessment of the damage will be released and measures to be taken announced.

Meanwhile, the minister of Internal Administration Calvão e Silva will visit Albufeira around 13:30, before moving to Boliqueime and Quarteira.

However, as can be seen in the images, everyone in Albufeira got down to work, trying to recover the damage as quickly as possible. There are still shops, garages and cellars full of water, mud and debris covering everything.
