«On every corner, there is a secret in Tavira!» – this was the conclusion of another Fam Trip, organized by the Algarve Tourism Region, which led journalists and tour operators to “rediscover” this municipality.

The gastronomy, history, legends and built and natural heritage of Tavir have been revealed to the eyes and palate of those who did not know it.

The visit started at the Islamic museum nucleus and “entered” the streets of the Historic Center, with the soundtrack of the “Fado com História” project, went on to the Igreja da Misericórdia, passed the Palácio da Galeria, which is also a museum, continued towards to the Castle and the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, he went down to the Convento da Graça, which is now a guesthouse, and stopped by the bank of Gilão (which before the Old Bridge – which is medieval and not Roman – is Séqua). Here, the flavors of the Mediterranean Diet were tasted. Octopus on the table... not in the drawer.

After lunch, it was time to set out to discover the Ria Formosa, seeing the landscapes, flamingos and dredging, and disembarking in Cabanas de Tavira.

After a bus and a boat, came the train: the one connecting Pedras del Rei and Praia do Barril which, on such a sunny afternoon, brought back to mind the summer, but with fewer people on the beach.

Then, there was a visit to the octopus capital – Santa Luzia – and a cultural snack at the Álvaro de Campos Library.

Tavira is land of octopus and it is land of tuna. At least it was. And where the Hotel Vila Galé Albacora is located today, there was a tuna fair. Those who are now enjoying the Spa, the rooms, or the view over the Ria over there may not have the notion that those who lived there decades earlier fought hard for their livelihood. For those, the hotel has a museum, with audiovisual resources.
