The Senior University of Almodôvar and the Senior Social Center will be inaugurated this afternoon, at 17:30 pm. The two new spaces will operate in the same building, in the old Tourist Office, in Praça da República.
According to the Municipality of Almodôvar, the Senior University is “a socio-educational and cultural project promoted by the Municipality of Almodôvar, promoted by ALSUD, Alengarve's professional education and training cooperative”.
This new feature, «intends to offer seniors in our municipality a socially organized living space, promote active aging, the acquisition and development of knowledge in a perspective of lifelong learning and also provide students with the frequency of classes where their knowledge can be disseminated, expanded and valued», advances the autakia.
The teaching component includes the subjects of English, Information and Communication Technologies, senior gymnastics, hydrogymnastics, plastic arts, decorative arts, music and singing, traditional dances, language and literature, well-being, health and safety, and history and heritage.
The classes at the Senior University of Almodôvar will be held from Monday to Friday, either in the county seat, in the premises of the former Tourism Office, in Praça da República, or in the centers located in Semblana, Graça de Padrão, Monte dos Mestres, Santa Cruz/Dogueno, Rosário, Aldeia dos Fernandes, Corte Zorrinho, São Barnabé, Santa Clara-a-Nova and Gomes Aires.
The village's Senior Social Center is «a space where this layer of the population can socialize and exchange experiences and at the same time break the social isolation that in many cases the elderly are subject to».
The executive of the autarchy believes "that both projects are of the greatest importance in breaking social isolation, in promoting knowledge, new life experiences and active aging".
