europhonicRádio Universitária do Algarve (RUA) and Rádio Universitária do Minho (RUM) are participating in a pioneering project, which will bring together university radio stations from all over Europe to debate, in the European Parliament, in Strasbourg, themes such as citizenship, immigration, employment, politics social, education, environment and economy.

From September this year until February 2016, almost a hundred university radios are present at the European Parliament, sharing knowledge about the European Union, through the radio program “Europhonica”.

Every month, an international editorial team, made up of young people from Portugal (RUA FM and RUM), France, Italy, Spain and Germany, will be at the European Parliament in Strasbourg for three days, where they will carry out this program with the duration of one. time, broadcast live from the “Vox Box”. Each country chooses the guests for the program, which will be entirely in the radio's native language.

The first broadcast of “Europhonica” is already on the 9th of September (Wednesday). In Portugal, the program is broadcast simultaneously at 19:00 on RUA FM (102.7 or online at www.street.pt, and in RUM (97.5 or online at www.rum.pt).

At a time when the union of Europe is increasingly debated, the theme chosen for the premiere programme, “Europe: Solidarity between Nations”, will bring to debate the current situation of refugees seeking Europe as a refuge and will rely on participation of MEPs Carlos Coelho and Liliana Rodrigues.

The objective of this project is to transmit to the different radio audiences a better knowledge of the European institutions and what is discussed there and trigger an interest in European politics in them.

For six months, themes such as citizenship, immigration, employment, social policy, education, environment and economy will be highlighted.

“Europhonica” is a unique opportunity to promote European citizenship and raise public awareness of the work carried out in the European Parliament.

According to Daniel Silva, information director at Rádio Universitária do Minho, “it is inevitable to give listeners a broader European context. RUM and RUA have been working on the monthly programs for a few months and we believe they are making an interesting contribution to the “Thinking Europe” that is marking our days. We will have young people questioning MEPs… This for six months. I think the contribution will be interesting”.

Sónia Rosa, production coordinator at RUA FM, adds that the intention is “to educate our audience and bring them closer to Europe. The fact that Portugal, through RUA and RUM, is on this list, gives an interesting centrality to our country, which walks side by side with radio stations from Spain, Italy, France and Germany”.

Who are the guests on the first show?

the MEP Carlos Coelho he is, among other posts, a member of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection and an alternate member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament.
