Portimão, Lagos and Beja are the three cities in the south of the country where, on the 19th and 20th of September, the Passeio da Memória will take place, the great annual event of Alzheimer Portugal, which marks the World Day of Alzheimer's Disease.
It consists of a solidary walk, reversing the funds from enrollments in full to Alzheimer Portugal. Its objectives are to inform and raise awareness of the importance of reducing the risk of developing dementia, the warning signs of Alzheimer's Disease and, above all, the importance of timely diagnosis.
In Portimão, the initiative starts at the Fairs and Exhibitions Park and includes a walk, as well as a visit to the Portimão Museum.
The Memory Walk arrived in Portugal in 2011 and hundreds of people walked 6km on what was the first Memory Walk in Portugal, which took place in Oeiras.
In 2012, Alzheimer Portugal extended the Passeio da Memória to three more cities and Coimbra, Funchal, Matosinhos and Oeiras hosted the Passeio da Memória 2012, bringing together more than a thousand people.
In 2013, the number of cities where the Passeio da Memória took place increased to 7: Oeiras, Matosinhos, Funchal, Pombal, Beja, Vila do Bispo and Ilha Terceira.
In 2014, we more than doubled the number of cities, totaling 15 cities in which the Passeio da Memória took place: Aveiro, Barreiro, Beja, Braga, Campo Maior, Fafe, Funchal, Lagos, Matosinhos, Oeiras, Pombal, Portimão, Viana do Castelo, Viseu and Terceira Island.
This year, the 5th Edition of Passeio da Memória takes place in 18 cities across the country, on the 19th, 20th and 21st of September.
According to the Alzheimer Portugal association, more than 182 people in Portugal suffer from dementia. In 2040, this number could reach 364 thousand.
Registration, which is also a donation, costs 5 euros.
