refugees_1Teams created by the Government will meet the refugees that Portugal will receive, before they head to our country, to better prepare for their arrival. These technicians will go to the countries where migrants are concentrated, to find out about their profile and plan the best route to give them.

“The definition of the refugees that we are going to take in does not depend on our country, but on the European institutions, together with the countries that take them in, such as Italy or Greece. As soon as that happens, we will take teams to these countries beforehand, to know the profile of these people and, based on that, better prepare their integration and reception in Portugal, in addition to giving them some prior guidance», revealed the minister Deputy and Regional Development Poiares Maduro, on the sidelines of a visit he made this Wednesday to the solidarity store of the Support Center for the Homeless, in Faro.

"We want their integration into our society to be as successful as possible, to give them the opportunity to have a successful life project and, with that, to make a contribution to the country," he added. Part of these refugees may head to the Algarve, namely the Aljezur and Olhão, although, in the latter case, there are still some reservations on the part of the City Council.

Although there is still no set date for the arrival of refugees to Portugal, “the urgency is clear, just look at the images”. "It is very important that Europe reacts and quickly, as I think it is finally happening", considered the member of the Government.

At the moment, the possibility of Portugal hosting around 3 refugees is on the table, more than the 1700 initially planned. A situation that will not be a problem, as, according to Poiares Maduro, "the Government has always said it would be willing to receive more people."

“There is a moral obligation on all Europeans to provide the protection and care that is due to people fleeing a scenario of war and situations where their lives are at risk. I think there is a consensus in our country that this is a moral obligation that we have and we need to be consistent with the generalized recognition of this obligation”, according to Poiares Maduro.

"To be consistent with this is to organize, in a methodical and well-prepared way, together with civil society and municipalities, the reception of refugees in Portugal," he added.
