Refugees Field Fuseta_cortadoeditadoThe Portuguese Red Cross (CVP) delegation from Moncarapacho/Fuseta is ready to set up a refugee camp in a land given to it, in Fuseta, with the capacity to accommodate "40 to 50 people".

Second revealed to Sul Informação António Palma, director of the Red Cross delegation in this parish in the municipality of Olhão, it would be possible “to streamline the process, so as to start receiving the first people in mid-October”. This would require 'some investment' by CVP, which 'has not yet been quantified'.

The intention to receive refugees in this fishing village in the municipality of Olhão has already been expressed, in a letter, to the Portuguese Council for Refugees (CPR), as revealed this Saturday by the weekly «Expresso». However, as I told the Sul Informação António Palma, director of the Red Cross delegation in this parish in the municipality of Olhão, “no decision has yet been taken”.

What there is is the will of the local Red Cross to help migrants who are crossing the Mediterranean en masse in search of help in Europe, fleeing war in North Africa and the Middle East. This is because, stressed António Palma, aid to refugees "is part of the mission of the Red Cross and is part of the statutes" of this entity.

“We have a land of 1700 square meters that was given to us for the construction of a nursery. This project ended up not moving forward and we decided to send this letter of intent to the CPR, to listen to them about the situation of refugees” and to be available to help.

This land, according to our newspaper, is located on Rua Engenheiro Francisco Leal, close to the water tank and the Fuseta Health Extension.

The idea came from the CVP, but it deserves the applause of the president of the União de Freguesias de Moncarapacho and Fuseta Manuel Carlos. "They asked me for my opinion and I said that I thought it was very good and that I supported that decision", said the mayor, speaking to the Sul Informação.

“Out of conviction, I'm in favor. There are many people in favor, but there are also those against, opinions are divided. In my view, what moral do we have for not helping? There have also been Portuguese in difficulties who have been welcomed by other countries. And it is a question of European solidarity, we cannot just want to receive money from the European Union», he illustrated.
