Violent crime drops in early 2015 in the Algarve, but rises overall

crime-pixViolent and serious crime in the Algarve decreased by 9,5 percent between January and April this year, compared to the same period in 2o14. According to GNR data, there were 15 fewer crimes of this type in the region. However, according to the same source, general crime increased 0,3%, a result of 11 more crimes than last year.

The data was announced during the presentation of the reinforcement of security forces for the summer in the Algarve, which took place on Saturday, with the presence of the Minister of Internal Administration Anabela Rodrigues.

The data for the first four months in the region leave good indicators for the year 2015, since, throughout 2014, violent crime in the region fell by only 1%, corresponding to six fewer crimes in the entire calendar year.

The municipalities with the highest numbers, in 2014, with regard to violent and serious crime – in the GNR's area of ​​jurisdiction – were Loulé, Albufeira and Silves, respectively.

In the case of Loulé, from 2013 to 2014, there were 21 fewer crimes, but in Albufeira there were 19 more crimes, and in Silves there were seven more violent or serious crimes.

On the opposite side, Alcoutim, in 2014, did not register any violent crime, and Monchique and Vila do Bispo had only one crime of this kind.

With regard to general crime, Loulé, Albufeira and Silves once again occupy the “top”, and in 2014 there were fewer crimes in the three municipalities than in 2013.

The PSP also presented its figures on crime in the Algarve and the result for the first quarter of 2015 follows the downward trend also registered by the GNR, with violent and serious crimes decreasing by 11,5 percent in the first quarter of 2015, while the number of detainees decreased by 10,7%.
