seismograma_20150512-nepalThe earthquake measuring 7,4 on the Richter scale, which hit Nepal, Asia this morning, was detected at stations of the national seismic network, namely in Vila do Bispo, announced the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) .

The IPMA recalls that today, May 12, at 07:05 am UTC (8:05 am in mainland Portugal), a large-scale earthquake (7.4MW) occurred in Nepal, with an epicenter around 80 east of Kathmandu, and a focal depth of about 15 kilometers.

This earthquake is the biggest replica of the one that happened on April 25th (Mag 7.8MW), with the epicenter being located about 150 kilometers to the east of the main event, adds the IPMA.

According to the focal mechanism already calculated by the USGS, and similarly to the previous one that occurred on April 25, the earthquake would have originated in an inverse fault in the collision zone between the Indiana plate, to the south, and the Eurasian plate, to the north.

This earthquake was detected at the stations of the national seismic network, with the first waves being recorded at 08:16:55 (local time) at the Bragança seismic station.

The latest estimates released by the Nepal emergency operations center point to 42 dead and 1117 injured as a result of this new earthquake.
