church of wavesThe official patron of the church is São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, who is not even one of the best known saints, but everyone in Tavira knows it as the Church of Nossa Senhora das Ondas. On Friday, 29 May, at the end of the afternoon, the conservation and restoration works that it has undergone over the last three years will be inaugurated, as part of the commemorations of the National Fisherman's Day.

The intervention cost, as revealed by the Chamber of Tavira, 354.638,6o euros. The work carried out was at the level of roofing and ceilings, coating of interior and exterior walls, covering of spans, masonry, integrated heritage and electrical installations.

In addition to this intervention in this temple, which is classified as a Monument of Public Interest, there was a need to intercede in the high choir, chancel arch and in the structure that supported the church's nave ceiling, for the sum of 72.996,35 euros.

“The intervention area was in a high state of degradation, so it was necessary to carry out a careful analysis of the changes and causes of deterioration”, adds the municipality. The work aimed at a “curative/preventive solution, as well as an aesthetic improvement”.

The completion of this project reinforces "the Municipality's commitment to the valorization of the religious heritage, in order to make the city more pleasant for its inhabitants and all those who visit us", adds the municipality.

Following the celebrations on this date, in a solemn session, the Chamber of Tavira also honors four seafarers as a form of recognition and appreciation for their dedication to the sea: Francisco do Carmo Marcelino, José Daniel de Sousa Cabrita (Tavira), João da Cruz Sebinho Romeira (Santa Luzia) and José João da Conceição Romão (Cabanas).
