works-variant-125-7-e1423238297893The road that connects the area of Penha to Conceição de Faro will be reopened this Thursday, after years in which it was partially cut, due to the work to complete the North Bypass to Faro.

“Good news” for the inhabitants of the Algarve capital, from the perspective of the mayor of Faro Rogério Bacalhau, but he doesn't arrive without a hitch, as from Friday the Ribeira das Lavadeiras road will be closed, between the Athletics Track and the Rotunda da Conceição, as part of the same intervention.

A constraint that was expected, as it is a necessary condition for the completion of the work, scheduled for the end of June. Also, it will be for a much shorter period. «It is necessary to build a roundabout there, to connect the bypass to our roundabout in Olhão. I hope that, in two or three weeks, the roundabout will be completed and circulation can be restored», explained Rogério Bacalhau.

The section of Estrada da Penha that will now be reopened, which begins right after the Municipal Cemetery and extends to the Rotunda da Conceição, was closed for about five years, which led to complaints from the population and pressure from various sectors to reopen it. quickly.

The Farense mayor himself was keen to emphasize the urgency of reactivating this connection, on the day it was announced that the Variant works, which had been suspended for years, were going to start again.

Rogério Bacalhau: "I hope the work doesn't delay, because we all wanted it to be ready yesterday"

“This has been a very big aspiration of the people from Faro for many years. The road will be reset on Thursday, with all conditions. The works are now being finalized», he summed up.

Despite being satisfied with the reopening of the road, Rogério Bacalhau admits that this moment took a long time to arrive. “There were many problems, namely with the renegotiation of the Public-Private Partnership [which finances the work]. But what matters is that everything is in good progress and that, soon, much of the traffic that had to enter into Faro, with the damage that this brought, it can make circulation much more comfortable and safe», he said.

The mayor of Faro he added that so far he has not had any indication that the deadline advanced by the concessionaire Rotas do Algarve Litoral last March, that of completion of the work by June 30, will not be fulfilled, despite «there were some problems». “I hope the work doesn't delay, because we all wanted it to be finished yesterday”, he illustrated.

“Just last week I spoke with the president of Estradas de Portugal and, so far, they have not received any request to extend the deadline. These are highly complex works, so let's see if they can finish on time. They are working at a good pace, but there were some complex problems to solve, namely in the Ribeira das Lavadeiras area, where water, electricity and telecommunications pipes had to be diverted», he said.
