fisherman's day_8The city of Quarteira will celebrate Fisherman's Day – which is celebrated on Sunday – for three days with music, gastronomy and, with the highlight of the celebrations, on Saturday: the traditional wash.

The festivities kick off on Friday, the 29th, with musical entertainment at Praça do Mar, from 18 pm, with the performance of Nestor and Nuno, who will be at the venue during the three days of the program. At 00 pm, the Domingos & Amigos project, led by Domingos Caetano dos Íris, takes to the stage.

On Saturday, the 30th, from 18:00 pm, at Praia de Quarteira, the traditional washing or the art of dragging ashore takes place, one of the attractions of this party.

According to the Municipality of Loulé, «in this unique and typical framework of this old fishing village, the population is invited to participate in the “pulling the net” to land where you can see the wealth that is still found in the waters that bathe Quarteira, through the quantity and quality of fish that, year after year, is caught. This initiative has become, over the years, an attraction for the many tourists who are already in the Algarve at this time of year».Washed in Quarteira

After the wash, there will be a Night of Fado, starting at 21 pm, with the fado singers Teresa Viola and Pedro Viola. .

Gastronomy is another aspect of the festival and, for three days, visitors will be able to taste some delicacies made by the families of fishermen from Quarteira in the “Petiscos do Pescador”.

The commemorations of Fisherman's Day constitute, according to the Loulé local authority, «one of the most important dates in the life of the city of Quarteira, since here there is one of the most important fishing communities in the country. In addition, the sea (and the rich gastronomy connected to it) is one of the main tourist attractions of this city, which for many years was a typical fishing village on the Algarve coast».

The celebrations of Fisherman's Day in Quarteira are the result of a partnership between Quarpesca – Quarteira Shipowners and Fishermen Association, Loulé City Council and Quarteira Parish Council.
