Antonio Sampaio da NovoaThe University of Algarve will award the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa to António Sampaio da Nóvoa, former Rector of the University of Lisbon (UL), next 7 May, at 16:30 pm, in the Grand Auditorium of the Campus of Gambelas.

In addition to the speech of the new doctor, who is going to be the candidate for the presidency of the Republic, the ceremony also includes speeches by the Rector of UAlg, António Branco, and also by the former rector of the UL, professor José Barata-Moura, who, as acting as godfather, he will deliver the praise speech of António Sampaio da Nóvoa.

The proposal for awarding the degree of Honorary Doctor António Sampaio da Nóvoa was presented by the Department of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FCHS) of UAlg, in a long process of consultation with the Academic Community (about 200 members, including teachers, staff and students). which began in October 2014 and ended on March 18, with its approval in the Academic Senate.

For António Branco, «this ceremony pays due academic tribute to the outstanding role played by António Nóvoa in defense of Science, Culture and Education, as essential pillars of Democracy.»

The Rector also underlines "the relationship of great coherence between this decision of the Senate and the main lines of the Strategic Plan of the University of Algarve, which emphasizes Education as the institution's core mission."

António Sampaio da Nóvoa is Full Professor at the Institute of Education of the University of Lisbon. He is currently director of the Public Policies initiative at the University of Lisbon.
