Professors from the University of Algarve, including the rector António Branco and other members of the rectory team, researchers and students today, at noon, celebrated five minutes of silence in homage to José Mariano Gago, concentrating on the doors of the various academic buildings .

Mariano Gago, former Minister of Science, himself a scientist, passed away last Friday, aged 66, victim of cancer, having been buried in the cemetery of Pechão (Olhão), where his family originates.

Mariano Gago «prompted and deeply marked science in Portugal in recent decades, contributing decisively as president of the FCT and Minister of Science for the development of the national scientific system in many of its aspects».

«Some of us would not like to fail to highlight his passage and his contribution to Portuguese science», so this tribute was promoted «as public recognition of the national scientific community for the contribution of the Professor Mariano Gago».

Hence, universities, research institutes and laboratories and scientists from all over the country decided to honor him this Monday, fulfilling five minutes of silence in his memory, at 12:00 pm. The University of Algarve has also joined in this symbolic homage, responding to an appeal from the rector António Branco.
