Slave MarketThe renovation works of the Slave Market building, in Lagos, started in the second week of March. According to the autarchy, the completion of the works is scheduled for the end of June.

Subsequently, all the exhibition contents will also be renewed for the future installation of the museum space “Núcleo do Mercado de Escravos”.

Since the end of last year that the slave market has closed its doors for these works to be carried out. According to a note sent by the Municipality of Lagos, «the intervention in the building, for the subsequent integration of a museology program extending to the two floors» has an award value of around 143 thousand euros plus VAT.

The municipality emphasizes that «the Slavery Nucleus of the Lagos Museum it is one of the structuring projects of the Municipality in the historical, cultural and heritage aspect, and is framed in the UNESCO project “Rota do Escravo”».

In the future museum space, an account will be given of «the important archaeological find that occurred in the city a few years ago, and which came to demonstrate with material testimonies, the role of Lagos as one of the first and main places for the disembarkation and trade of slaves from the West African coast, already referred to in the Chronicle of Guinea, by Zurara».

The Câmara de Lagos also recalls that «the intervention in this property results from the commitment assumed in the Collaboration Protocol signed by the municipality with the Portuguese Army - which provided for the reciprocal transfer of properties located in the historic center of the city -, and which allowed the municipality to move to use the entire building (ground floor and first floor).

According to the same statement, «under the partnership established with the Portuguese Committee of UNESCO's “Rota do Escravo” project, the necessary museology and museography actions are already being developed, which also have the technical support of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve».
