algarve watersThe International Public Tender for the Construction of the New Waste Water Treatment Plant Faro-Olhão, which will make it possible to replace the WWTP in Olhão Poente and Faro Nascent, was released last week.

The base value of the work is 14,5 million euros and it is estimated that the contracting of the work, if everything runs smoothly, could take place during the second half of 2015.

The infrastructure to be built will receive sewage from the parishes of three municipalities, namely from Faro (Union of Parishes of Faro, Union of the Parishes of Conceição and Estoi), of São Brás de Alportel (Parish of São Brás de Alportel) and of Olhão (Parishes of Olhão, Pechão and Quelfes).

The future WWTP of Faro-Olhão will be located at the location of the current WWTP of Faro East, in the municipality of Faro, «about 2 kilometers east of the city of Faro, on a parcel at the site of Sítio da Garganta, included in the lagoon area of the Ria Formosa», illustrated Águas do Algarve, in a press release. The work should have an execution period of about two years.Such as Sul Informação had already advanced.

The company added that the base value of the tender could change, "given the high degree of complexity of this work and environmental requirements reflected in the DIA, this value".

Its size, as revealed to our newspaper by the spokeswoman for waters of the Algarve Teresa Fernades, in December, will be similar to its counterpart in Companheira, in Portimão, whose beginning is soon and was designed for a population of 140 inhabitants.

The new WWTP will occupy "the space where the current anaerobic lagoon and part of the facultative lagoon are located, and it will only be necessary to "deplete and clean these lagoons, including the removal of sludge, as well as the disposal of the sludge in an appropriate final destination. sludges and screens inside'.

In other words, the new WWTP will occupy “an area substantially smaller than what is currently being occupied by the current WWTP of Faro Source".

Ria FormosaFrom a more technical perspective, the contract to be signed «has as its object the preparation of the WWTP Execution Project of Faro-Olhão, from the Environmental Compliance Report of the Execution Project (RECAPE), Health and Safety Plan, Technical Compilation, Environmental Management Plan in Construction and the execution of civil construction works (earthworks, reinforced concrete bodies, circuits hydraulic), supply and assembly of equipment (metalomechanical, electromechanical, electrical, automation, instrumentation and supervision) and treated effluent discharge outfall in the receiving environment, of the WWTP of Faro-Olhão».

This is a work that has been demanded for a long time by mayors, the population, environmental associations and also by shellfish collectors and nurserymen. The reasons for this are revealed by the Algarve's own waters, which recalls that the two WWTPs to be replaced are “undersized given the current conditions of affluence (qualitative and quantitative)”.

Furthermore, these “old ladies” treatment stations “are based on lagoon systems, which are inadequate given the quality levels now required for the treated effluent to be discharged into the receiving environment”.

Before moving towards this solution, a study was carried out, which determined "that the most technically and economically advantageous solution corresponds to the construction of a single WWTP", in Faro, and a link between the current WWTP Poente de Olhão and the new infrastructure.
