waterAlcarias Grandes, in the parish of Azinhal, is the village in the municipality of Castro Marim that will have a domestic treated water supply network. The intervention, with 25 supply branches, will be completed by the end of this month.

The contract, which encompasses around 50 villages in these municipalities, will be developed throughout the term and carried out by direct administration, which, stresses the municipality, "significantly reduces installation costs".

Until now, the supply in about fifty mountain villages in the county was still made through public fountains or boreholes from the inhabitants themselves. That is why the municipal executive has chosen, as one of the «greatest objectives», to take the water network to these villages. Cerro do Enho and Campeiros were the first towns to see this dream come true.

Francisco Amaral, mayor of Castro Marim, says that “the municipality waited many years for a hypothetical community funding, the situation was unsustainable. We are talking about around 1000 people, most of them elderly and with great mobility difficulties».

In the course of this undertaking, the Chamber says that it has verified “the recovery of properties from old generations that have been vacant for decades, so it is also expected that some residents will return to their homeland, now with better living conditions and a significant improvement in living conditions. ».
