Only 11% of Portuguese admit taking holidays away from home this Christmas

christmas vacationAbout one in ten Portuguese intend to take holidays away from their place of residence this Christmas or New Year's Eve. Going on holiday away from home, they think they will spend, on average, around €2014 (not counting gifts and Christmas Eve).

Compared to last year, fewer Portuguese people point to the lack of financial availability as a reason for not taking holidays away from home this Christmas.

In 2013, 49% of consumers confessed not to vacation for economic reasons, a figure that has now dropped to 33%.

As for the Portuguese who take a holiday this Christmas, the reasons vary: 9% are going to take a holiday to meet their family, while 2% intend to do it as a form of leisure, traveling and sightseeing.

Younger individuals, between 25 and 34 years of age, are the ones who most admit to taking vacations for traveling and sightseeing (4%). Respondents between 35 and 44 years are the consumers who most leave home to meet their family (15%).

In the 45-54 age group, it is where there are more individuals who claim not to be able to go on vacation at this time due to lack of financial availability (43%).

The study also reveals that older consumers, between 55 and 65 years, are the ones who intend to spend the most on Christmas holidays (€274), not counting gifts and Christmas Eve. Individuals between 45 and 54 years of age intend to spend only €73.

Geographically, it is in the South that there are more consumers without financial means to take holidays away from home this Christmas or New Year (45%).

It is also in this region that the average cost perceived for those intending to take a holiday is lower: only €75. Individuals from Porto and the North region have €300 and €211 respectively.

This study was developed in collaboration with Nielsen, and 600 surveys were carried out with individuals from mainland Portugal, of both sexes, aged between 18 and 65 years, between September 30th and October 2nd, 2014. The maximum error is +4.0 for a 95% confidence interval.
