Optimist_sailThe Associação Naval do Guadiana won in Juveniles and Infants, respectively by Daniela Miranda and Luís Gonçalves, the 2nd round of the 2014/2015 Algarve Light Sailing Championship, held at the Praia da Rocha regatta field, on weekend 13 and December 14th.

Difficult victory for the club from Vila Real de Santo António, in technically demanding conditions and after missing the first day of the competition.

ANGuadiana did not travel to Portimão on Saturday, held back at the start by an intense rain and by the decision of the club president, attentive to a notice of civil protection communicated the day before to all clubs by the direction of the Regional Association of Sailing of the South.

On Saturday, the race committee raised the starting flag at 12:00. With two meters swell and light wind, only one race was held on the first day of the race. The Formula Class (windsurfing) did not go to sea that day.

On Sunday, the second day of the race, three regattas were held in all classes present – Optimist (Infants and Youth), Laser 4.7, Laser Radial and Formula – and already with the presence of the team from the Associação Naval do Guadiana.

The swell was less than on Saturday, but the wind remained moderate to light and very uncertain, which made the sailors' work very difficult. There was no fleet of 420 in this race.

Daniela Miranda took 3rd, 2nd and 1st place in the races held on Sunday and won the race in Optimist Juvenis, the largest fleet in competition.

The young sailor adapted well to the conditions and triumphed in the same regatta field where, a few months ago, she won the national youth title.

With the victory this Sunday, Daniela put herself in the fight for the regional title, for which Afonso Rodrigues (Ginásio Clube Naval de Faro) and Tomás Quitéria (Clube de Vela de Lagos) returned to score strong. In the 1st Competition of the Algarve Light Sailing Championship 2014/2015, in Lagos, Daniela had achieved a modest 7th place.

In Optimist Infantis, Luís Gonçalves won two of the three races played on Sunday and took 2nd place in the other. The ANguadiana sailor reinforced his race for the Infantis regional title, after a 3rd place in the 1st race in Lagos and benefiting from the less good results achieved in Portimão by his more direct opponents, Guilherme Cavaco and Miguel Sancho, from GCNFaro.

Clube Naval de Portimão, host of this 2nd event of the Algarve Championship of Light Sailing 2014/2015, got a tripe on the podium of Class Laser 4.7, with Rodrigo Correia (1st) and Francisco Farinha (2nd). Important result for Rodrigo Correia, who missed the podium in the 1st Race, won by Francisco Farinha.

The host club also obtained a tripe in the Formula Class (windsurfing), with Miguel Martinho (1st) and Vasco Chaveca (2nd) repeating the results achieved in the 1st Race, in Lagos.

João Rodrigues (CVLagos) won the race in Laser Radial, achieving an important result in Portimão, as he benefited from the absence of Pedro Costa (CVLagos), winner of the 1st Race, and David Coutinho (Grupo Naval de Olhão), 3rd in Lagos (1st Test). João Rodrigues came from a 2nd place in Lagos and has now gained edge in the regional leadership of Radial.

The competition now goes into holiday break. The 3rd Event of the Algarve Light Sailing Championship 2014/2015 is scheduled for the 14th and 15th of March 2015, in Albufeira.

Before that, on the 17th and 18th of January, the second regional qualifying tests will be held for the Optimist and Laser classes, in Vila Real de Santo António.
