Municipal Theater of PortimãoThe Municipal Theater of Portimão (Tempo) will receive the opera on its stage Rita, by Gaetano Donizetti. The show is scheduled for November 29, at 21 pm, being produced by the Contemporaneus association.

Contemporaneus explains in a press release that “it seeks with its opera productions to provide access to this type of show to all types of audiences, from the experienced in this genre to those who have never seen an opera”.

The association started in operatic production in 2011, with the opera Cosi Fan Tutte, having, last season, brought the operas to the stages in Portugal La Princesse Jaune, of C. Saint Saens, and The Wandering Scholar, by Gustav Holst.

Regarding the show, the company says that “the action takes place at the inn of Rita, the repressive wife of the shy and clumsy Beppe. The couple sees their lives turned upside down with the arrival at their inn of a traveller, Gaspar. The traveler tells Beppe that he was married to a woman from the city, but that on one of his voyages his ship sank and he nearly drowned and, just by luck, he managed to reach land and has been living in Canada with another woman ever since. Upon receiving news that his wife had died in the great fire that decimated the city, he decided to return to obtain a death certificate so that he could marry in Canada. Beppe, upon hearing this story, quickly recognizes Gaspar as Rita's first husband and, astute, sees in this return of her late husband the opportunity to get rid of the hated Rita».
