Portuguese in the trenchesThe 11th of November, the day of the Armistice, which marked the official end of the First World War, in 1918, was chosen by the City of Lagos to start the cycle “The War for Peace”, which aims to focus on the idea of Peace and the urgent need for its defense, for the “war for it”. The initiative runs until December 13th.

«This is a unique program in the Algarve, integrated in the nationwide program of commemorations for the centenary of the Great War, which involved a transversal work of many sectors of the municipality linked to culture and education, but also voluntary work by the Lagos Nucleus of the Liga dos Combatentes and many individuals», he stressed, in statements to the Sul Informação, the councilor for Culture of the Lacobrigense City Council.

Maria Fernanda Afonso added that, in addition to the film cycle, conferences and exhibitions, the “Aguerra pela Paz” initiative gives “a great focus on working with schools, even taking 9th grade students to debates with elements of the League Nucleus of Combatants and cinema sessions». For, if the objective is not to let the memory of a war “in which Portugal participated and in which it entered with closed eyes, not knowing what it was going to be lost”, it is necessary to bet on the younger people to keep that memory alive.

And why this highlight so great, with an ambitious program that stands out at a regional level? «Lagos has a very active League of Combatants Nucleus, has a great military tradition and, in addition, there were people here who died in this First World War», explains the councilor. «That's why we bet on this programming».

Programming in various areas

memory daysAt the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year, 1918, an armistice finally came into effect between the Allies and the Central Powers. Signed six hours earlier in the French Marshal Foch's railway carriage, parked in the Compiègne forest, some 80 kilometers from Paris, it marks the official end of the First World War, after 4 years, 3 months and 9 days of fighting.

The program of the “A Guerra pela Paz” initiative, organized by the Municipality of Lagos, (through the Dr. Júlio Dantas Municipal Library) and by the Lagos Nucleus of the Liga dos Combatentes, includes the presentation of a movie cycle at the Lagos Cultural Center (“From the Front Line – insane records”), the realization of a conference cycle in the Municipal Library of Lagos (“We were the ones”), with the presence of reputable national researchers, and to whom the “Days of Remembrance” (Portuguese and European project for the rescue and construction of national and European memory and identity).

It also has the organization of a exposure structured in two nuclei, a museological and iconographic one – “Memories of the Great War”, on display at the Lagos Regimental Warehouse, and a bibliographic one – “The writing of the Great War”, on display at the Municipal Library of Lagos.
