A man who this morning violently stole the suitcase of an octogenarian lady in a street in the center of Portimão, having also attacked her in the face, was caught shortly afterwards by the PSP.
The violent robbery took place this Wednesday, just before 8:00 am, when the 22-year-old man, Portuguese nationality, approached the victim, tearing off the suitcase he was carrying, after hitting him.
The victim had to be transported to Hospital do Barlavento, in Portimão, to "receive treatment for the injuries he presented".
The PSP was immediately called to the scene and, after providing the first assistance to the elderly woman and collecting some data about the assailant, it mounted an operation through the streets of the city center, mobilizing "police means from all sub-units of that Police Division", covering all the “possible escape routes”.
A few minutes later, they located the suspect who, as soon as he saw the police, "tried to get rid of a key to a vehicle belonging to the victim."
The man ended up confessing to being responsible for the robbery, as well as indicating the place where he had abandoned the suitcase and the other belongings of the elderly woman, which were "fully recovered and returned to their rightful owner".
The PSP also informs that "the steps to investigate whether the detained suspect are linked to other previous criminal incidents registered in that city continue".
The suspect arrested, already with a criminal record for committing crimes against property, will be present at the Court of Portimão, predictably tomorrow.
Last Friday, the PSP had already detained another man, 31 years old, Portuguese, indicted for several robberies in the city of Portimão.
At the time, the police revealed that «since the end of July of this year, robberies on public roads in the city of Portimão had been sporadically recorded, with some incidence in the center of that city, whose victims were always of advanced age».
Apparently, this wasn't the only elderly assailant.
