landscapeThe colloquium “Landscape and Architectures” will take place on the 5th of December, Friday, at the Green Auditorium of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Algarve, on the Campus de Gambelas, in Faro.

This initiative, in a joint organization of SRegional section of the Algarve of the Portuguese Association of Landscape Architects (APAP) and the University of Algarve, aims to promote a comprehensive and diversified discussion forum, open to technicians from different areas and the community in general, for debate and reflection on issues related to the dynamics and transformations of the landscape.

The colloquium, to which interested parties can submit their papers, is divided into three panels: «Landscape in Architecture», «Architecture in Landscape» and even «Representations of Landscape and Architecture».

The theme for the Call for Submissions focuses on the concept of the colloquium, Landscape and Architectures, «looking for projects and interventions that, through an integrated and comprehensive approach to landscape, have contributed to the construction of new coherent territorial supports , functional and innovative and ensuring the pursuit of the principles underlying sustainable development. Projects and works in landscape architecture, architecture, urbanism,
design and other related disciplinary areas (parks, gardens, commercial, tourist and residential areas, masterplans, proposals for competitions, academic works, artistic installations, etc.)”, stresses the organization.

“Preference will be given to submissions relating to the last five years (2009 – 2014), but no time limits are set for applications”.

The project submissions to be presented at the colloquium will be evaluated by a scientific committee composed of Gonçalo Duarte Gomes and Paula Gomes da Silva (both from APAP Algarve Regional Section), Desidério Batista (MarqP/CEPAC – FCT, University of Algarve; CHAIA, University of Évora), Miguel Reimão Costa (FCT, University of Algarve), Filipe Cunha (Municipality of Faro), Vítor Lourenço (Algarve Delegation of the Southern Regional Section of the Order of Architects) and Ana Moya Pellitero (Higher Institute Manuel Teixeira Gomes; CHAIA, University of Évora).

The colloquium's organizing committee, in turn, is composed of landscape architects Gonçalo Duarte Gomes, Desidério Batista and João Rodrigues (Algarve Regional Section of APAP).

The initiative has the support of CEPAC – Center for Studies in Heritage, Landscape and Construction of Ualg and NAPUA – Nucleus of Landscape Architecture, also of Ualg.

ATTENTION: The colloquium “Landscape and Architecture” which was scheduled for December 5th, has been postponed to March next year, the organization announced.

Panel 1 – Landscape in Architecture
Landscape architecture, as an eminently practical discipline, has a set of fundamentals that are reflected in the way its professionals approach and transform the landscape.
Common denominators such as time, ecology, perceptual processes or the interpretation of marks and human actions are essential elements during its design process.
This panel will present 3 Landscape Projects that, through different materializations, show what is the contemporary praxis of the landscape architect.

Panel 2 – Architecture in Landscape
Since architecture is one of the disciplines with the greatest visibility in the processes of appropriation and transformation of landscapes, sharing the same physical support with landscape architecture means that, in order to carry out a comprehensive and inclusive reading of the landscape, there is a need to understand architecture as a body of knowledge that, in the exercise of its functions, has points of approximation and differentiation in relation to landscape architecture.
The 3 projects to be presented in this panel seek to demonstrate architectural processes and manifestations that are sensitive to the physical and cultural constraints imposed by the landscape, as a relational and aggregating concept.

Panel 3 - Representations of Landscape and Architecture
Since the concept of landscape is intrinsically related to the representation process, both landscape architecture and architecture support much of their intervention in the graphical representation of their actions, whether in design (with drawing, photo-realistic simulations or plans and explanatory diagrams), as well as after its material execution using photography and all the technological evolutions registered in that field – the digital age, drones, among others.
This panel promotes a discussion about the procedures used in the process of representation of the landscape and how the transformations that have taken place have changed the perception of the landscape and the exercise of design and construction of space.
