New 10 euro noteThe new 10 euro banknotes will go into circulation tomorrow, Tuesday, 23 September, throughout the eurozone, but in Portugal, not all payment equipment will be able to receive the new banknotes, today admitted the Bank of Portugal.

João Amaral Tomaz, administrator of Banco de Portugal, who was speaking at the press conference for the presentation of the new 10 euro note, referred to private equipment, namely vending machines and car parks. As for the automatic payment of tolls, the issue should already be in place.

The central banks of each eurozone country produced 4.500 million 10-euro notes from the second series and Portugal received 162 million of these notes, according to the Bank of Portugal, which did not disclose the associated investment.

João Amaral Tomaz added that "the printing process alone, which is the responsibility of 15 national central banks, took about a year."

Banco de Portugal clarifies that the notes of the first series “will never lose their value. There is no prescription after 20 years as it used to be for the Escudo. In other words, the banknotes of the first series, even after they are no longer legal tender, may be exchanged for an unlimited period of time, at Banco de Portugal and at the other national central banks of the Eurosystem”.
