Odemira secondary schoolThe Municipality of Odemira approved a motion “to demand the execution of the requalification works of the Escola Secundária Dr. Manuel Candeias Gonçalves”, contracted and publicly announced by the Ministry of Education in 2011, but never started.

The autarchy, in a motion approved unanimously, at the Chamber meeting held on September 4, considers that the lack of works created «precarious and undignified working conditions for teachers, staff and students, with negative effects on normal teaching activity, in the process of teaching/learning and throughout the educational community».

In 2010, the requalification works of the Secondary School of Odemira were announced, with the Ministry of Education presenting the project and publicly announcing the beginning of the works, in a session held in March 2011.

Four years later, underlines the Municipality of Odemira, "the works were not carried out and the facilities continued to deteriorate." It is that, "even with the contract contracted in 2011, it was decided by superiors to suspend it, without any alternative works to minimize the effects".

The Municipality of Odemira denounces that «the conditions for teaching for teachers, for working for employees, and for studying and learning for students, are manifestly inadequate. obsolete water pipes with frequent breaks, old and degraded furniture, and the inexistence of an effective internet access network».

Over these years, several were the steps taken by Deputies, Mayors, Teachers, Auxiliaries and Parents, with the Presidency of the Republic, Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Assembly of the Republic and regional bodies, although without practical results.

The PSD deputy Mário Simões visited the school on January 13, saying that due to the «level of degradation of the facilities and equipment» of the school, students and teachers are at «security risk» and are «conditioned» in their performance, alerting to the «consequences» of the situation in the «utilization» of the students.

"The Secondary School of Odemira urgently needs work", concludes the deputy, and the situation "will have to be seen" as "priority".

For this reason, the Alentejo municipality finds it strange that “in May, the Government announced major works in 14 Secondary Schools and that the Dr. Manuel Candeias Gonçalves Secondary School in Odemira was not included in this list”.

Given the "obvious lack of political will of the Government", the Municipality of Odemira considers the extension of this framework unacceptable, without any concrete perspective as to the execution of the works, regretting that the next school year, like the previous ones, has beginning in extremely precarious conditions'”.

The municipality has already questioned the Minister of Education and Science on whether the situation of the Dr. Manuel Candeias Gonçalves Secondary School was assessed after the suspension of the works was determined, whether a safety inspection was carried out on the facilities and what the conclusions were, if the works were carried out. requalification of the school are considered a priority and for when its implementation.

The Municipality of Odemira demands “from the Ministry of Education and Science that, as a matter of urgency, the necessary measures be taken, so that the requalification works of the Dr. Manuel Candeias Gonçalves Secondary School are carried out”.
