Mendes Bota marks the 1st of AugustPreventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence will bring together deputy Mendes Bota, the president of the Alternative and Response Women's Union (UMAR) Maria José Magalhães and the activist for the fight for women's rights, Maria Antónia Palla at Salão Nobre da Câmara, on August 26, at 21 pm.

This will be another conference of the cycle «Before and After, For Tomorrow», included in the Citizenship Project of the Municipal Commission created in Loulé to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 25th of April.

The debate will be centered on the Istanbul Convention, as the new international instrument that criminalizes domestic violence is known, to which the Algarve deputy was very actively linked. The convention entered into force on August 1st.

“Mr. Mendes Bota was the author of Resolution 1635 and Recommendation 1847, unanimously approved in Strasbourg, on October 3, 2008, during the debate of his own report “Fighting Violence against Women: for a convention of the Council of Europe”, in which he urged the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to advance towards the creation of this Convention, having followed all of its steps, from the wording to the entry into force that is being mentioned”, explains the organization of the conference.

"In this saga, Deputy Mendes Bota had the support of two ambassadors to the Council of Europe, both with Loulé roots, firstly ambassador Américo Madeira Bárbara and, in the decisive final stage, ambassador Luís Castro Mendes," he added.

The UMAR, which Maria José Magalhães presides over, “is an NGO with 30 years of history, established on September 12, 1976, and was deeply involved in the advancement of the convention”. Maria Antónia Palla is «one of the greatest references».
