Poster III Ancient Sounds in the South 2014Music from other centuries echoes again in the municipalities of Vila do Bispo, Portimão and Lagos on weekends in August. The 3rd edition of the Ancient Music Cycle «Sons Antigos a Sul» has already started and will focus in 2014 on «the great musical centers of Latin Europe», a journey that begins in Italy and ends in Portugal.

With this cycle, the Academy of Music of Lagos seeks to make known in the Barlavento Algarve «some sounds from other times», namely in the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guadalupe [Vila do Bispo], in the Manuel Teixeira Gomes House [Portimão] and in the Armazém Regiment of Lagos. The concerts take place on Fridays (17 pm), Saturdays (21:30 pm) and Sundays (22 pm), respectively.

The five national and international professional ensembles that will star in the shows, on as many weekends, will show musical instruments such as the harpsichord, clavisimbalum, old chant, traverso, recorder, baroque violin, baroque cello, viola da gamba, lute and theorba, embarking on five historic voyages to the Renaissance, Baroque and European pre-Classic.

The festival, under the artistic direction of the harpsichordist Elsa Mathei, begins with Monteverdi, «revolutionary musician who marked the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque», and ends with Portuguese music for traverso from the time of D. Maria I (1734 – 1816).

The Portuguese Renaissance marks its position with “El Lusitano”, a program dedicated to the figure of D. Sebastião, in the transition from Portugal de Avis (1385 -1580) to Filipino Portugal (1580 to 1640).

This event is held within the scope of the Sustained Support Program for Arts and Entertainment, a structure financed by the General Directorate of Arts / Secretary of State for Culture, with the support of the Lagos City Council, Portimão City Council, Algarve Regional Directorate of Culture , Directorate of Military History and Culture of the Portuguese Army and Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
