The company Portimão Urbis will be extinguished, by decision of the municipal executive from Portimão. The Portimão City Council announced this Friday at the end of the afternoon that the mayor of the municipality has already transmitted the decision to end this municipal company to the workers and that the closing of the company is expected to be completed in 2014.
The decision results "from the analysis carried out over the last few months, identifying and evaluating the various factors that are relevant to justify the existence of the company as an autonomous entity of the Municipality". "From the analysis, it was evident that the risks for the Municipality of keeping the company in operation did not satisfactorily offset the costs associated with the operation of Portimão Urbis", as revealed by the Municipality of Portimão, in a press release.
To put this decision into effect, a new board of directors will be elected "very soon" for the management and urban rehabilitation company in Portimo, whose main task will be to take the necessary measures to implement this decision by the end of this year."
The deficit situation of Portimão Urbis was already well known and there had already been an effort on the part of the current municipal executive from Portimão to reduce the company's payroll. «During the mandate of the current Board of Directors, the salary mass of Portimão Urbis rose from around 3,7 million euros/year to 2,1 million, with the number of employees rising from 156 to the current 107», illustrates the municipality .
The operation of "extinction of that company with exclusively municipal capital" will mean that both the competences and the equipment under the management of this municipal company will be transferred to the remaining municipal universe, "hoping that from the point of view of the citizen they do not exist disruptions in services'.
"As part of the dissolution, the remaining liabilities will be transferred to the Municipality as the sole shareholder", added the municipality.
The way in which this transfer will take place will be discussed in the autarchy's own bodies, «seeking the widest possible consensus on how to integrate the company's activities in the Municipality, as well as the respective social plan, which will be done in due time».
"This decision was taken carefully and with the awareness that the lives of the company's employees will be affected, and therefore cannot be a reason for ridiculous expressions of joy such as those already observed on social networks, by some mayors with political responsibilities in the Municipality», considered the Municipality of Portimão.
