The 90th anniversary of the cork demonstration of June 22, 1924 will be marked by the Municipality of Silves in a solemn session to be held at the Hall of Hall of the City Hall, on June 25, at 18 pm.

Two conferences, which revisit the emblematic and symbolic event that marked the history of the labor movement in the municipality, will embody this tribute.

One of the lectures, entitled “June 22, 1924 in the Silvese Workers Movement: the anathema of the 'handkerchief in the pocket'”, will be given by Maria João Raminhos Duarte, specialist in Contemporary History (namely with regard to the Algarve region) and with several published reference works and other contributions in this area.

The other intervention, in a complementary register, will be in charge of Manuel Ramos, professor and historian, who was also director of the Cork Museum of Fábrica do Inglês.

After the conferences, the public will be invited to visit the documentary exhibition that evokes 90 years of the conflict between the police forces and the working class of cork from the forest, which has been evident throughout this month in the Paços do Concelho de Silves and was conceived by the Municipal Archive.

With this initiative, the Municipality of Silves intends to promote greater knowledge and civic awareness, on the part of the local population, about the identity and historical-cultural development of the municipality.
