It is one of the most anticipated times of the year for most students at the University of the Algarve and for many young people in the Algarve. In 2014, there is no need to wait any longer. The Academic Week (SA) of the University of Algarve began yesterday with the traditional Monumental Serenata, in Largo da Sé de Faro and will have the first night of concerts at the Penha Sports Complex, where the party is located, this Friday.
From today until the 11th of May, there are concerts for all tastes. This time, Jazz and Classical Music will not even be missing, in an unprecedented show in SA's programme, taking place on the last day of the event, a Sunday, at Teatro das Figuras.
But, let's go by parts. The party, organized by the Academic Association of UAlg, takes place day by day and, today, the headliner is an Algarve that has already launched internationally. The 'Pete tha Zouk' from the eyes of the Algarve does not need any introductions, together with university students in the Algarve, and is once again present at an event where he is a regular “customer”.
The first band to act, tonight, are the «Supa Squad», a Reggae/Ska band, inspired by African rhythms. This is followed by the «Expensive Soul», a band from Leça da Palmeira that is also “repeating” in SA do Algarve, with sounds ranging from Soul/Reggae to R&B/Hip-Hop. The music, until dawn, will be guaranteed by DJ «Mike Fuentes».
From here, the starting point for more than a week of revelry and music in the «País das Maravilhas», the venue of the party. The poster is almost entirely composed of Portuguese bands, many of them from the Algarve, with the exception of DJ Martin Solveig, who plays last Saturday, the 10th.
Tomorrow, the first Saturday, the headliner is Rui Veloso, who will be preceded on stage by «Happy Mess» and «Deolinda». Sunday, the main stars are «DJ Overule and MC Virgul», with the night opening with «Afroclass», followed by DJ «Danni Gato» and «Deejay Ecs».
On Monday, there is popular music with «Ivete Mangalho e as Rolhinhas» and «Fábio Lagarto». On Tuesday, the poster is headed by the Farenses Nome, preceded by Diogo Piçarra and «The Wax Flamingos» and on Wednesday there are «pimba» sounds, with «Quim Barreiros» taking the lead, being preceded by «Rúben Filipe». Thursday, as usual, is Tunas night.
SA's final weekend begins with a night of Hip-Hop, with Dealema and Valete as the headlines, but natural expectation for the new project «5-30», by Carlão (Pac-man, ex -From Weasel), Fred (Black Ear) and the MC Regula. Tonight, it starts with Tribruto and ends with «Beatbombers».
On Saturday, «DAMA» launches the last night of concerts in «País das Maravilhas», which follows with Tiago Bettencourt and has the high point with the performance of DJ «Martin Solveig», the international name of the 2014 SA poster.
Contrary to what is usual, the closing of the «País das Maravilhas» will not mean the end of the SA concerts. On Sunday, May 11th, the Orquestra Clássica do Sul and the Orquestra da Jazz do Algarve will stage the show «Ciclo de Música Americana», at Teatro das Figuras, which will close this year's edition of the event.
