The concerts by Ricardo Ribeiro and Diabo na Cruz, which marked last night – and this early morning – the opening of the Festival Sons do Atlântico, at Pavilhão do Arade, had little but enthusiastic audiences and deserved much more.

Ricardo Ribeiro sang the traditional fado, accompanied by an excellent guitar and viola trio, where one of the players was 94 years old. The fado singer had, at the concert, a phalanx of convinced supporters, among which was a Norwegian who usually promotes fado shows in his country and in whose house, in the Algarve, Ricardo Ribeiro would spend the night.

The fado singer sang some of the biggest hits on his current and previous album (“Largo da Memória”), as well as certain hits, such as “Nem à Paredes confesso”, sung in unison with the audience. And it was here that Ricardo Ribeiro gave an air of his grace, perfectly imitating other fado singers, such as Tony de Matos, Rodrigo, João Braga, António Zambujo and even Maria da Fé, drawing applause and laughter from the audience.

The concert (almost) ended with a chilling «Fado do Alentejo», in which the artist showed the full range of his voice, but also demonstrated how the roots of fado are also, in fact, in an Arab musical tradition that even brings us closer to flamenco .

It was already past midnight, when the lively band Al-Fanfarre, with their wind instruments and percussion, in the Balkan/Kusturica style, again led the resistant audience to the concert hall where Diabo na Cruz then performed. The audience wasn't much, but the overflowing energy of this band managed to get everyone jumping and dancing, featuring the oldest hits and even at least one new song.

Yesterday was the first night of Sons do Atlântico and it was Thursday, so there has not yet been a flood of public. But today's program, which features Souls of Fire and Chambao on the main stage, promises to bring more people to the festival which, due to the instability of the weather, had to move from Angrinha beach, in Ferragudo, to Pavilhão do Arade, in Parchal .

Accompanying the music is some crafts (little), snacks, especially those from Casa Grande de Ferragudo, and surprises, such as the offer, right at the entrance, of the new “pikiwine”, a 100% Algarve product that promises to make the delights of those who appreciate wines with other flavors. The chocolate pikiwine, which will be offered today, is said to be delicious!

Tickets cost eight euros and can be purchased on site. The main concerts start at 22 pm and midnight, but before that there is a lot of music on stage00, next to the snacks and crafts area. There is no lack of parking, in front of the Pavilhão do Arade. In other words, the ingredients are ready for another great night dedicated to “world music” in Lagoa.
