Half a thousand people walked 3 kilometers in support of the fight against cancer, last Sunday, in Castro Marim. The Solidarity Walk promoted by the local school community raised funds for the Oncological Association of the Algarve (AOA) and many joined, even without setting foot on the road.

In all, around 2 people paid the donation associated with the registration for the event, of 800 euros. The nearly 2 euros that were raised were delivered, on the same day of the walk, to the AOA. This money will help build a home for cancer patients undergoing treatment.

The mayor of Castro Marim highlighted the nobility of this initiative by the school community, as «the Algarve and the Algarve people must be very grateful to the AOA and its president, Dr. Santos Pereira». The best known part of the work of this personality is the Radiotherapy Unit of the Algarve, located in Faro.

The walk had the slogan “And when the steps become laces”, a phrase that was stamped on pink caps, offered to all participants. A release of pigeons, by the Sociedade Columbófila Castromarinense, signaled the departure. At the end of the march, the restaurants “O Infante” and “A Tasca Medieval” raffled off two vouchers.

The initiative was part of Mother's Day celebrations and was organized by the Castro Marim Schools Group, the Algarve Oncological Association and the Castro Marim City Council. The Voluntary Firefighters of Vila Real de Santo António, the National Republican Guard of Castro Marim, the Sociedade Columbófila Castromarinense and the two aforementioned restaurants also collaborated.
