This Thursday, deputies from the Left Bloc Helena Pinto and João Semedo questioned the Ministry of Health about the lack of material for carrying out cytology tests in the Algarve.

The Blocist parliamentarians questioned the lack of brushes in Portimão and Lagos and the possible rupture of stocks in Albufeira and Vila Real de Santo António, "as they are nearing the end".

According to the question addressed to the Ministry of Health, there is still “the record of the lack of this material, previously, in Faro».

The deputies of the Left Bloc asked minister Paulo Macedo about whether he is aware of the situation, what is the reason for the disruption of this material, which is necessary for carrying out cytology tests and, finally, "what measures will be taken to ensure the availability of the necessary material to carry out cytology tests to health units in the Algarve».

Commonly referred to as Pap smear, due to the Greek doctor who conceived it, Georgios Papanicolau, this exam allows to identify possible alterations in the cervix, among which are the infection by the human papilloma virus (HPV). As a general rule, this examination is carried out once a year.

“It is incomprehensible that, due to the lack of brushes, women cannot perform cytology when they go to the normal consultation with the family doctor, being forced to return later to do so. This is a dissuasive factor from the realization of this fundamental exam”, stresses the Left Bloc, which considers that this situation is “absolutely unacceptable” and has to be “repaired with all urgency”.
