A DiVaM to lean back on the monuments of the Algarve

The voices of the Moças Nagragadas, singing the woman and freedom, echoed through the Roman ruins of Milreu during the presentation, on the 10th, of the program Dinamizar, Valorizar os Monumentos – DiVaM, promoted by the Regional Directorate of Culture in several of the monuments under its tutelage in the region.

The new name – DiVaM – is the result of the first letters of the words of the program, but it also intends to evoke the Mediterranean nature of the program, aimed at enjoying the monuments in a relaxed way, and preferably leaning back on a couch.

The program changed its name, but little else has changed, taking advantage of the work that came from behind, namely the «Música nos Monumentos» program and other previous initiatives. Thus, DiVaM proposes to continue to bring music of various types, theater, street theater, historical recreations, performances, cinema, proverbs, dance and visits to seven monuments in the Algarve: Castelo de Aljezur, Fortaleza de Sagres, Ermida de Nossa Lady of Guadalupe, Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, Castle of Paderne, Castle of Loulé and Roman Ruins of Milreu.

There is also an eighth monument involved, the Abicada, but here the activity, which even took place on Monday and was mainly aimed at technicians and archaeologists, did not take place there but in the Museum of Portimão, since the villa Roman has almost nothing to see – the mosaics were removed for conservation and restoration, an operation that is now taking place in the premises of the Museum of Portimão, under the responsibility of a specialized company.

In all, the program involves 69 initiatives from 19 Algarve associations: Lagos Music Academy, Tavira Music Academy, Al-Teatro, Associação Música XXI (Faro), International Association of Paremiology (Tavira), Arquente, ARFA Regional Philharmonic Association of Faro, ATAF – Philately Center of Faro, ARCMmusicians (Faro), Apeorality / Nagragadas Girls, Ao Luar Theatre, Good Offices, Loulé Culture House, Choir Group of the University of Algarve, Southern Classical Orchestra, Paderne Music and Recreation Society, Silvense Philharmonic Society, TEL Lagos Experimental Theater and Tertúlia Cultural Association of Aljezur.

The program also includes contributions and partnerships from the Portimão Museum, the Albufeira Municipal Museum and the Municipal Councils of Loulé, Aljezur, Albufeira, Faro, Portimão and Vila do Bispo.

Old and new initiatives

Alexandra Rodrigues Gonçalves, regional director of Culture, admitted that the program “takes advantage” of many of the activities previously developed, but also presents new features, such as the concerts by ARC Músicos, which, on Saturday, April 19 (16:30 pm), premieres at the Roman ruins of Milreu his show “4 Sites, 4 Legends”, entirely designed for the Algarve's monuments.

“We have a very strong focus on music, but there will also be a lot of theatre, literature, poetry, historical recreations and much more”, said the official.

The brochure for this DiVaM, designed by a Design student at the University of Algarve, who was an intern at the Regional Directorate of Culture, was produced only in Portuguese, although most visitors to the monuments in the region are even foreigners. A predominance that was felt last Thursday, during the presentation of the program in Milreu, when occasional visitors to the Roman ruins, all foreigners, watched with delight the performance of the Nagragadas Girls, even though they did not understand why there were so many well-dressed people there.

The regional director explained that the program was conceived only in Portuguese because «this is the preferred audience for these concerts, the proximity community». And he also expressed the wish that this DiVaM “brings families to visit some of these monuments”.

The main objective of this program is to «create a cultural dynamic that leads local communities to revisit their heritage, but also to have a surprise effect on visitors that contributes to creating new memories of these spaces. In addition to being “places of memory” the monuments are also intended to be places of experiences, emotions, “places of good moments”».

A DiVaM full of initiatives

DiVaM has already started to show what it's worth last weekend, to mark the International Day of Monuments and Sites, but the next few days, coinciding with the long Easter weekend, bring some firsts.

Thus, this Wednesday, the 16th, the Castle of Aljezur receives, at 10 am and 30 pm, the «Charanga do Pintassilgo», by Ao Luar Teatro. Tomorrow, the 15th, it will be Charanga's turn to perform at 00:17 am at the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe (Raposeira) and at 10:30 pm in Vila do Bispo. On Easter Sunday, the 15th, it will be time for the presentation at 00:20 am in Vila de Sagres, and at 10:30 in Fortaleza.

Also at the Fortaleza de Sagres, on the same 20th, but at 16 pm, there will be a concert by the Academy of Music of Lagos.

At the Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Raposeira) on Saturday, the 19th, at 15:30 pm, Nina Soulimant will perform in concert.

On Good Friday, April 18, at 10 am and 18 pm, visits will be promoted to discover the Medieval Wall of Loulé, in an initiative of the local Council.
