The Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, in collaboration with the Chambers of VRSA and Castro Marim, celebrates the 39th anniversary of the Sapal de Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Natural Reserve, next Saturday, April 5th, with an Open Day for the entire community.

To mark the date, the reserve has prepared an extensive program of activities at the Sapal de Venta Moinhos Interpretive and Information Center and in the surrounding area, between 9:00 and 23:30.

The initiative encompasses around 30 activities spread over various thematic areas, including guided tours, nature sports activities, musical and dance entertainment, a film festival and various workshops.

This year, in addition to the opening of the schedule, the Traditional Products Fair, the Film Festival with the documentary «Environment and Sustainability» and the Closing Concert, at 21 pm, led by Domingos Caetano, with «Música Intemporal Portuguesa» .

The «Open Day» of the Sapal de Castro Marim Nature Reserve and Vila Real de Santo António aims to make the local population and visitors aware of the potential of this, which was the second protected area to be created in the country by Decree-Law No. 162 /75, of March 27, after the Peneda-Gerês National Park.

The Sapal Nature Reserve is a wetland located in the estuary of the Guadiana River where there are records of 169 regular species and 17 occasional species, mostly water birds with high conservation value such as the stilt, the spoonbill, the flamingo, the tailor, the caravão, the dwarf tern and the marsh weed.

The natural space also has economic potential in traditional activities, such as the artisanal production of certified sea salt and fleur de sel or the production of certified fish in low-intensity aquaculture.
