Angolan writer Pepetela opens, on May 8, at 21 pm, the round of “Direct Speeches” which, in the coming months, will bring some of the greatest literary creators of the Portuguese language to the Municipal Library of Loulé.

Camões Award (1997) and Doctor Honorary from the University of Algarve (2010), Pepetela is the author of a vast work with wide international projection, started in 1972 with Ngunga's Adventures.

Before the session at the Loulé Library, on the same 8th, at 14:30 pm, Pepetela will also be in Quarteira, at the Auditorium of the Laura Ayres School, in a meeting with teachers and students, in a session moderated by Conceição Bernardes, director of the educational establishment and Portuguese teacher of recognized prestige.

The cycle “Direct Testimonies” is promoted by the Municipal Committee for the Commemorations of the 40th Anniversary of the 25th of April, which aims to «create a permanent cultural and civic bridge between the Library and Schools of the Municipality, always promoting the circulation of reference writers and essayists of the Contemporary thinking and the Portuguese language, in these centers of excellence in citizenship».

Undoubtedly the greatest voice of Angolan creativity today, Pepetela (pseudonym of Artur Carlos Maurício Pestana dos Santos, real name of the writer born in Benguela, in 1941), has a degree in Sociology, and is a professor at the Faculty of Architecture at Universidade Agostinho Neto, in Luanda.

Your works as Mayombe (1980) The Dog and the Caluandas (1985) Parable of the Old Tortoise (1997) and The Near End of the World (2008) or even death tales (also from 2008), go beyond the boundaries of Angolan experience before and after independence, becoming indelible metaphors for the contemporary world and its contradictions.

For Pepetela, this is the inexhaustible theme as her most recent works attest – The Plateau and the Steppe (2009) to the south. the sombrero (2011) and The Shy and the Women (2013)

At the end of the “Direct Speeches” at the Municipal Library of Loulé, Pepeta will autograph her works for readers who so wish, and a book stand is being organized, in partnership with Livraria Papelnet.

Carlos Matos Gomes (the charismatic Capitão de Abril who, as a novelist, is also known by the pseudonym Carlos Vale Ferraz) is the next guest of “Discursos Diretos”, and who, on May 15th, shares his interventions among the Municipal Library and the Loulé Secondary School, where he will be presented by the librarian teacher Arlete Santos.
